Child uses sleeping mom's fingerprints to buy Pokemon gifts

Child uses sleeping mom's fingerprints to buy Pokemon gifts

A fingerprint-ID locked phone wasn't going to stop this 6-year-old from catching 'em all. Online purchases have been a pain in the wallet for parents, with the Federal Trade Commission hitting Apple, Google and Amazon with complaints accusing the companies of making it too easy for kids to make in-app purchases. Kids buying online without their parents' consent has cost these companies millions in settlements.

Super Mario’s Reluctant Leap to the iPhone

Super Mario’s Reluctant Leap to the iPhone

As recently as five years ago, Nintendo’s late president, Satoru Iwata, was adamant that Super Mario would never make the leap to smartphones. “If we did this, Nintendo would cease to be Nintendo,” he said in an interview with Nikkei, in 2011. The decision was philosophical rather than economic. The goal of smartphone developers, Iwata had said earlier that year, “is just to gather as much software as possible, because quantity is what makes the money flow.”

Original The Legend of Zelda Map Gets Printed In 3D

The Legend of Zelda on NES had a sprawling world by the standards of 1980s console games. While decades ago people used to draw their own maps to try and keep track of where each dungeon and secret, alternative methods now exist. Like, for instance, 3D printing a replica of the game’s entire overworld.

'No Man's Sky' cleared in false advertising investigation

No Man's Sky developer Hello Games has emerged from a marketing investigation unscathed. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority has spent the last two months examining claims that the game's steam page is misleading. Disgruntled players had taken issue with screenshots, videos and text which, in their opinion, showed the game with better visuals, performance and planetary exploration. These covered warping, ship battles and the complexity of extraterrestrial life.

Easter eggs evolved: Why gamers spent 3-years-plus studying GTAV’s Mount Chiliad

Easter eggs evolved: Why gamers spent 3-years-plus studying GTAV’s Mount Chiliad

This unsolved mystery is a perfect artifact of communal sleuthing in the Reddit age. Just below the peak of Mount Chiliad, a huge mountain in the far north of San Andreas, a mysterious mural sits high atop a cliff face. It looks like a map of the mountain's interior—a network of tunnels that connect five small chambers and three large ones with what appear to be a UFO, an egg, and a jetpack within them. Whether it's actually a map isn't clear. Nearby, painted on the bottom edge of a lookout platform, are the words "come back when your journey is complete." And beneath that, painted on the ground, there's a red eye.

The true story of Nintendo's most wanted game

The true story of Nintendo's most wanted game

None of this would've happened had Jennifer Thompson not gone thriftin'. This was in April 2013, and she was browsing clothes and $1 DVDs at the Steele Creek Goodwill in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, when she noticed it behind the glass counter. The video game title sparked a memory, a Yahoo article about the rarest games in the world. Jennifer carefully drove her '99 Honda Accord across the street to McDonald's, just to use the restaurant's Wi-Fi to make sure she hadn't been wrong.

Best Gaming Mouse: Buyer's Guide (Nov. 2016)

Choosing a mouse is a very personal decision. What may suit one person won’t necessarily suit another. There are a range of factors to consider from the various features to comfort and style. This isn’t made any easier thanks to the huge market that currently exists for gaming mice. While gaming mice can be subjective topic, one thing is generally understood to be true among gamers: prediction and acceleration are bad news for competitive play, and DPI numbers are far more emphasized by the big name manufacturers than they need to be.

Sony Issues Response to Xbox One and PS4 Cross-Platform Play

Yesterday, Microsoft announced plans to open up Xbox One for PS4 cross-platform play, and publicly invited many other companies and developers to consider connecting its networks with Xbox Live as well. Now, Sony has given a somewhat open-minded response to the press outlet GameSpot that neither confirms nor denies the possibility of such a deal going down with Microsoft. Nevertheless, Sony‘s reply to the invitation of uniting its PlayStation Network with Xbox Live is moderately encouraging...

How a forgotten ’80s gem created the formula for video game horror

How a forgotten ’80s gem created the formula for video game horror

Conventional wisdom tends to ascribe the birth of survival-horror to Alone In The Dark. Infogrames’ 1992 Lovecraftian adventure bore practically every hallmark of the genre and proved a major influence on its two most prominent series, Resident Evil and Silent Hill. What’s often omitted from history books is how Dynamix’s Project Firestart, a much less conspicuous title, had been released for the aging Commodore 64 three years earlier and provided the genre’s formula.

A New Impossible Coin [Super Mario 64]

A New Impossible Coin [Super Mario 64]

UncommentatedPannen shows that there's yet another impossible coin in the game, located in the huge version of Tiny-Huge Island. Specifically, there's a coin spawner there that's intended to spawn 5 coins in a horizontal line on the ground. However, this coin spawner's located under the ground, causing the most uphill coin to not load properly. In particular, this coin spawns about 49 units below the ground, triggering a failsafe that causes the coin to immediately unload. Currently, there's no known way to collect this coin.

Violence In Games Does Not Cause Real-Life Violence

Violence In Games Does Not Cause Real-Life Violence

Violence is a strategic act. What I mean by this is that a threat to employ physical aggression against someone else unless they do what you want is one that needs to be credible to be useful. If a 5-year-old child threatened to beat up her parents if they don't stop for ice cream, the parents understand that the child does not actually pose a real physical risk and, if push came to shove, the parents would win a physical contest; by contrast, if you happen to hanging out with a heavy-weight MMA fighter and he demands you pull over for ice cream...

Modern Warfare is still Call of Duty’s finest game

There have been mixed reactions to Infinity Ward’s announcement and trailer for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, if we were to judge by the downvotes on YouTube. Sales projections are still solid for the new title that is going to feature some futuristic space action as opposed to the traditional boots-on-the-ground combat, so it is not easy to tell what the player base’s opinion of Infinite Warfare really is at this point.

Samsung made YouTube remove video of GTA mod that turns Note 7 into a bomb

Samsung made YouTube remove video of GTA mod that turns Note 7 into a bomb

Samsung apparently doesn't see much humor in a Grand Theft Auto V mod that turns the recalled, hazardous Galaxy Note 7 into an in-game weapon. In fact, the company is trying to erase it from the internet completely. Samsung has issued a DMCA takedown targeting a YouTube video that showcased the mod, which gives the Note 7 explosive, grenade-like capabilities. It was a pretty great way of poking fun at Samsung's ongoing PR crisis — and now the company is responding in a terrible way: ridiculous overreach and misuse of the DMCA tool.
