10 Epic Video Game Console Fails

10 Epic Video Game Console Fails

Today, the console business is hardly lucrative, with a few notable exceptions. This has always been the case, with a few companies dominating the competition, such as Atari, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. Most people have heard about the success of the NES (for older readers), PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and the more recent PlayStation 4. Unlike these success stories, we’re going to jump into the consoles many may have not heard about...

Guy Beats Fallout 4 Without Killing Anyone, Nearly Breaks The Game

Fallout 4 expects you to commit murder. While you can occasionally avoid killing others, the wasteland is ruthless and demands violence. That’s how Bethesda intended the game to be played, anyway—but clever players are finding ways around it. Back in July 2015, The Guardian interviewed Todd Howard, Fallout 4’s game director. Howard was asked about what playstyles the game would support—traditionally, Fallout games let players approach problems...

The Humbling and Inspiring Tale of the Game That Proved Hitler's Name Is Still Worth at Least A Million Dollars

The Humbling and Inspiring Tale of the Game That Proved Hitler's Name Is Still Worth at Least A Million Dollars

“The people who made Secret Hitler advertise it as a playable psychological model of how totalitarianism takes root. Their sales pitch also reassures that the game ‘doesn’t model the specifics of German parliamentary politics.’ Which makes sense: just as all art must draw some line around reality, so did Secret Hitler’s designers pick and choose from the horrific totality of actual-Hitler’s work, isolating just the right parts to weave into their party game.” By Rob Dubbin.

Oculus has announced that it's shipping "early builds" of its Rift VR headset to developers, along with the developer kit SDK 1.0. According to the company's blog, "the Rift SDK 1.0 and runtime include features tied to the consumer product, so we've currently limited the release to developers putting final touches on launch titles." The Promise of Virtual Reality is Starting to Look Very Real

Only a handful of virtual reality headsets existed when Alphabet unveiled Google Glass, but the past half-decade has seen billions invested in VR, moving a technology once thought of as a gimmick much closer to the everyday lives of real people. Virtual reality companies raised $1.46 billion in venture capital from the start of 2012 through the third quarter this year, according to CB Insights, marking four straight quarters that these start-ups reached $100...

Hackers Threaten Xbox Live, PSN DDoS on Christmas (Again)

Remember last year, when hackers known as Lizard Squad took Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network offline on Christmas Day, leaving your brand-new Xbox One or PlayStation 4 largely inoperable? It might happen again. A new group calling itself Phantom Squad is threatening to do the exact same thing this year. In a now-deleted tweet, the group pledged to "shut down Xbox live and PSN this year on christmas [and] keep them down for one straight week."

How ‘Rocket League’ Became 2015′s Surprise Videogame Hit

The team behind “Rocket League” sensed it might have a winner on its hands after Universal Pictures asked about working one of its entertainment properties into the indie game. They settled on a classic: the DeLorean from the movie “Back to the Future.” It’s just one of several vehicles players can purchase for a few bucks in “Rocket League,” a quirky mash-up of soccer and auto racing, and one of 2015’s surprise videogame hits.

The Kick Off 2 World Cup: Competitive e-sports with a 25-year-old Amiga game

The venue—nestled in the heart of Dublin and a stone's throw from the infamous Temple Bar district—is the former Williams and Woods chocolate factory, a grubby graffiti-covered building that's home to the city's burgeoning creative community.

With $100M In Crowdfunding, 'Star Citizen' May Not Be A Scam, But It Feels Like A Cult

Star Citizen, the upcoming space sim from Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts, has hit a milestone that seems almost too ridiculous to be believed. It just passed $100M in funding. Not just funding, but crowdfunding, as supporters of the game have taken the budget into the stratosphere not just through traditional support through avenues like Kickstarter, but by pre-purchasing ships and founders packages which range from a few dollars to seemingly ludicrous $15,000 bundles. But they’re selling.

The cyborg chess players that can’t be beaten

Computers have revolutionised the way chess is played – and can beat any player. But could a part-human and part-computer player be even more powerful? It all started back in 1968 with a simple bet. A 23-year-old Scottish chess champion called David Levy was at a cocktail party. The party was being hosted by Donald Michie, founder of the University of Edinburgh’s department of machine intelligence and perception.

'The Witcher 3' And 'Fallout 4' Show Us That Single-Player Games Should Live Forever

It’s about that time where everyone starts to compile their Game of the Year lists. There are a few last minute additions to be considered (Rainbow Six: Siege, Just Cause 3, Xenoblade Chronicles X), but I think most have come up with many of their top picks already. It’s likely that many GOTY lists will include Fallout 4 or The Witcher 3 somewhere near the top. And I think that’s a significant achievement, given that we now exist in an age...

How Board Games Got Literary

How Board Games Got Literary

The notion of turning fictional settings into games isn’t a new one, but it’s one that has become more and more prevalent. Whether you’re purchasing games at a large store or one of the many specialty shops dedicated to them, you’ll find a number of games whose inspiration comes from literature. Some take on entire fictional settings; others nod in the direction of the plot of a specific work.
